The Lake District Guide

Welcome to your guide to family friendly accommodation in the English Lake District

When you're travelling as a family, you may want to make sure that the whole family has a great time by selecting accommodation that understands and caters to the needs of your children. There are some super places in the Lake District that practically guarantee you and your kids, babies and toddlers will have a wonderful holiday - we've listed some of the best below.

Remember that you might want to think about whether a hotel is totally geared up for children, or whether it just provides the basic facilities like cots and high chairs. For instance, are children's activities available all the year round, or just at certain times? How much do these facilities cost? And there are many other factors - here are just a few. Do they have a crèche for babies and toddlers? Are there qualified staff to look after your children in any activity open to them? Are the children's activities open to parents as well (if you want to spend this time with your children)? Will you need to book childcare and children's activities in advance? Does the hotel have children's menus and different dining times? Will you need to make special arrangements for a toddler sleeping in your room? Does the hotel provide other equipment like kettles, microwaves, buggies and backpacks? Is there a baby listening system? Are there child reductions on the hotel tariff?

Here is our list of child-friendly and family-friendly accommodation in the Lake District.

South & Central Lake District family friendly accommodation

Whitewater Hotel, Newby Bridge, CumbriaNewby Bridge - Whitewater Hotel & Leisure Club

This is a family friendly venue with all the luxurious touches that adults will appreciate. See their entry in the romantic breaks section!

Bowness on Windermere - Burnside Park

One of the best options for a family can be self-catering rentals. When this is combined with the facilities of a hotel and leisure club, swimming pool with dedicated children's area, a children's play area and a family friendly approach in every aspect of the operation, a relaxed cafe with kids' menu and a fine dining restaurant for the adults, you have all the ingredients of a successful holiday.

Lake Windermere - The Low Wood Hotel

Low Wood Hotel Lake WindermereThis is another hotel that has pioneered special activities for children. They've got a club for kids under 12 run by a big furry dog - or at least, by his human colleagues! And with goody bags, children's menus, regular splash times for the children at the hotel's leisure clubs, rooms with facilities for children, reductions on prices, and best of all a watersports centre where children can learn to sail, this is the child-friendly hotel at its best. The hotel is a luxury hotel with all the other facilities you'd expect, and they do take account of other guests' needs by restricting the hours in which children can dine in the formal restaurants. That seems to us to be a good compromise. And finally, the hotel has one of the best views across Windermere.
